What Should You Check Before Hiring Someone Who Calls Themselves an AI Expert?
AI expertise has become one of the fastest-growing claims in business services.
That is understandable.
Demand has grown quickly and many professionals have invested serious time in learning how to use the technology well.
The difficulty for business owners is that the title itself proves very little.
AI Expert, AI Consultant and AI Strategist can mean very different things depending on who is using the phrase.
So what should a business owner pay attention to?
Start with how they think, not the tools they name
A long list of software can sound impressive.
It does not tell you whether the person can make good decisions inside your business.
Ask how they decide whether AI belongs in a process at all.
A thoughtful professional should be comfortable explaining when they would leave a workflow alone, when they would use a standard automation and when AI genuinely adds value.
If every problem is met with another AI tool, that is useful information about their approach.
Ask what happens when the AI is wrong
This question reveals a great deal.
Strong AI work should account for failure before the workflow is built.
The person should be able to explain who reviews the output, what type of errors they expect and how the business avoids sending inaccurate material straight to a client.
Responses that rely on the technology simply becoming more accurate are not enough.
Ask about your information
Business owners should know what data will be placed into AI systems and where that information goes.
A professional working responsibly should be able to discuss this without brushing the question aside.
They do not need to be your lawyer or data protection officer.
They do need to recognise when the work raises questions that require specialist advice.
Look for operational thinking
The strongest AI support often comes from someone who understands the business process before trying to change it.
They ask what the business is trying to achieve.
They want to know what happens before and after the part being automated.
They think about the team members affected by the change.
This is one reason IAOBM has developed a Certified AI Strategist pathway alongside its Certified OBM work.
The Association’s focus is not simply on tool use.
It is on AI inside real business operations.
Credentials should be checkable
If someone presents themselves with a formal certification, a business owner should be able to verify it.
IAOBM’s directory gives clients a place to confirm Certified status and explore professionals who have chosen to build deeper capability in modern operations.
AI is too important to hire purely on confidence and vocabulary.
Good questions will tell you far more.
