The Certified OBM Has Changed. Here Is What the Role Looks Like Now.

When the International Association of Online Business Managers formalised the OBM role in 2009, online businesses looked very different.

Teams were smaller. Technology stacks were simpler. Remote work had not yet become ordinary across so many industries.

The need that created the role has stayed surprisingly consistent.

Business owners still reach a point where growth creates more moving parts than they can personally hold.

What has changed is the environment the OBM is managing.

From keeping things moving to leading operations

A Certified OBM is not hired to be the owner’s most efficient task-doer.

The role sits at a different level.

The OBM is there to take ownership of operational flow so the business owner does not remain the central point for every decision, handover and problem.

That may mean leading the delivery of a launch, improving how the team works together or rebuilding a process that has become too dependent on the owner.

The exact work varies.

The responsibility is the common thread.

Technology has changed the shape of the work

Modern businesses often rely on a collection of connected platforms rather than a single system.

The CRM may feed a project platform. Payment activity may trigger onboarding. AI may draft or classify information. Automations may move data between tools before a person ever sees it.

That creates opportunity and hidden dependency.

A strong OBM needs to understand enough of the operating structure to know what happens when one part changes.

They do not need to personally build every technical element.

They need to know when to ask the right question, when to call in specialist support and how to keep the business outcome in view.

AI adds judgement to the job

The arrival of generative AI has made this more visible.

Businesses are experimenting with ways to save time and reduce repetitive work.

Some ideas are excellent. Some create unnecessary risk or poor customer experiences.

Certified OBMs are increasingly expected to help business owners tell the difference.

That is why current IAOBM training now prepares new Certified OBMs to work in an AI-empowered business environment.

The focus remains operational leadership.

AI is one more part of the business that needs thoughtful management.

The profession is becoming more valuable

As business tools become easier to buy, implementation becomes less of a competitive advantage on its own.

Good judgement becomes more valuable.

The person who can see the business as a connected system becomes more valuable.

The person who can translate a founder’s idea into something a team can actually deliver becomes more valuable.

That is the modern Certified OBM.

The tools around the role have changed.

The reason businesses need it has become stronger.
