A wee rant on a Friday eve…
I hate it when I go to a website and can’t tell whose site it is!? When they have no information re: the person/people who are actually behind the website and business. Ran into this today at a site that I won’t name.
Makes me wonder, what are they trying to hide?
I remember working with a client quite a few years back, I was going to be helping him with a new website. He thought it would be fun to purposely be anonymous and put a picture of himself with a bag over his head. The work that he was doing (spiritually based) was something that he felt strongly wasn’t just ‘about him’ – and as such he thought he should keep himself out of the website and let the work speak for itself.
I had to talk him out of that idea… see the thing is that online – and ESPECIALLY in information based businesses – people want and need to connect with people. If you are a coach, consultant, information marketer or any other kind of ‘service’ based business you absolutely have to stand front and center in what you do. It is one of the best (perhaps the only?) way to really differentiate yourself from others who are doing similiar work.
If I see two people who are offering similar *stuff*, the way that I decide who I want to buy from is based on the person themselves. Who do I connect with more? And if I can’t tell who the person is behind the business, then I won’t buy from them. I simply don’t trust a business that doesn’t have a name/face/person attached to it.
And really, look around you at some of the best information/service based businesses… they are always led by someone who is very obviously at the forefront of all that they do.
So stand up loud and proud in the work that you do. Let people know who you are. Post your picture on your site. Share a bit about yourself and let your personality shine out in your business. Don’t be shy.
And if for some reason you don’t want to do so, well that speaks to bigger issues at hand imo. Which is a topic for another time. 😉
